Pedestrianising Des Voeux Road Central to provide an alternative short-distance transportation option (walking) to reduce road transport demand (private cars, taxi, etc), as a way to reduce roadside air pollution. The DVRC Initiative is a non-profit approach to create a pedestrianised green artery along Des Voeux Road Central, from Western Market to Peder Street. To improve the pedestrian experience of Hong Kong’s Central Business District by reconsidering traffic management and by creating a pedestrian and tram precinct. DVRC is a joint effort from the community, professionals, academics, business operators, property owners and all other stakeholders. In long term, the Movement hopes to raise people’s awareness of social cost of their behaviour, and even make people live greener, smarter and more sustainable.

The West Island MTR line has recently opened, and the Central-Wanchai Bypass and the MTR’s South Island Line and Shatin to Central railway will also be opened soon. These provide the opportunity to re-arrange traffic, address congestion, and reduce roadside noise and air pollution in Central.
